Traditional Sword Programs

Japanese sword training is a wonderful place for students to begin their path in Kobudo (martial arts of classical times), and allows for a new student to develop an understanding of strong taijutsu (unarmed fighting technique). For the advanced level martial artist, regardless of style, beginning on a journey to understand the classical Japanese sword is a compliment to previous learning. Opening the doors of time, a disciplined martial artist can apply their strengths and subtleties to the sword.

At our Dojo, students study three traditions of sword, each with specific qualities for certain conditions of combative application. They are:

Kukishin Ryu

Founded in the eleventh century, the Kukishin Ryu tradition employs techniques specific to the field of combat armor clad Samurai. Students will learn the history, tactics, and combative applications behind this fascinating tradition.

Togakure Ryu

The secret sword techniques of the Ninja. The tradition of Togakure Ryu is the only existing tradition of Ninjutsu to have survived into the twenty first century. Its system of the Ninja sword dates back to the fourteenth century where it began in the mountains of Togakushi. The Ninja sword employs extremely unorthodox combatives. Today, there are only a small handfull of tachers who have been taught the true tactics of the Ninja sword.

Jinen Ryu

The Jinen Ryu was founded by Manaka Unsui Sensei, using quick, unarmed movements of certain traditions and combining the principles and tactics of both the Ninja and Samurai sword. While challenging in form, the techniques are nimble and lack unnecessary movement, as it is Sensei's wish that students understand the true fighting elements of the Japanese sword in a complete system
